Qatar (Doha) - Ras Girtas Power Company (RGPC) has announced the completion of the first phase of the Ras Laffan C Power & Water Project. With the completion of this phase, the company has the ability to supply up to 1833 Mega Watts (MW) of Power to the national grid.    With the completion of the remaining phases of this project next year, the project will reach its design capacity of 2730 MW of Power and 63 MIGD of desalinated water.

This Project, which is the largest in Qatar and one of the largest installations of its kind in the Middle East, is an important  Power and desalination project that will help fuel the  growth of Qatar s economy under the wise leadership and vision of HH the Emir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Chairman of  Ras Girtas Power Company, stated that RGPC is proud to contribute and be a part of this exciting future of the Power and water industry in Qatar. He also stated that the project is to keep pace with the ever growing power and water demand in Qatar.  He added that this project is a success largely due to the continuous guidance and support of  H. E.  Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy and Industry,

Faisal Obaid Al Siddiqi, CEO RGPC, stated that the demand for electric power and water has been increasing in Qatar due to sharp population growth and rising industrial demands.  This Project is expected to make up approximately 30% and 20% of the country's total electrical generation and water supply capacity respectively in 2011 and play an important role as a major supply source of electricity and water. He also stated that this project was an extremely fast track project.

The engineering, procurement and construction is on a turnkey basis by Mitsui Co and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company is a major sub contractor. The plant will be a state of the art design , environmental friendly, with eight F3 gas turbines (235 MW each) by MHI, Japan,  four steam turbines (240 MW each) by MHI, Japan,  and 10 MED (6.4 MIGD each)  units by Sidem, France. The first phase that is completed now are the eight gas turbines, the rest of the Project is under construction. It is expected that the Water Plant will be completed by October 2010 and the entire Facility by April 2011.

RGPC, a joint venture company, is developing this power and water plant to meet the requirements of the State of Qatar, through a Power and Water Purchase Agreement (PWPA). The project is built in phases from 2010 onwards and the complete Facility will be operational by 2011. The net capacity would be 2730 MW and 63 MIGD. The total project cost is estimated to be US $ 3.9 billion. Under the build-own-operate and transfer (BOOT) 25-year PWPA, RGPC will sell power and water to KAHRAMAA.

The Project is located at Ras Laffan Industrial City ( RLIC ), situated on the coast about 100 km north of Doha, capital city of Qatar. Natural gas fuel for the project is being supplied under a Fuel Supply Agreement between QP and RGPC.

Shareholding in the joint venture company (RGPC) will be Qatar Petroleum (QP) (15 %), Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC) (45%), SuezGDF (20%), Mitsui (10%), Chubu (5%) and Yonden (5%).(QNA)
