French President Nicolas Sarkozy met yesterday with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri and stressed efforts to maintain stability, security and sovereignty in Lebanon.

A statement issued by the Elysee Palace, said Sarkozy commented on a deadly border clash between Israeli and Lebanese troops, saying "we must do everything in order to avoid new tensions."

Sarkozy stressed that France, along with the various regional and international forces, "will continue to support Lebanese authorities, democratic institutions, and efforts to promote stability, security and sovereignty of Lebanon."

The statement said the French President and Hariri discussed during the 90-minute meeting bilateral relations and the situation in the Middle East. It said the meeting came "within the framework of traditional friendship between France and Lebanon. ()
