Syria Made Visible Progress on Millennium Development Goals

Syria (Aleppo) - Syrian development and strategic polices have made remarkable progress during the latest years. Syria has been able to increase rates of joining schools, enable the woman, narrow the gap of poverty and decrease the average of kid deaths, according to State-run Syrian News Agency..

The 3rd national report on the Millennium development goals for 2010, prepared by the State Planning Commission in cooperation with the UN development Program has shown an increase in the rate of joining preparatory schools up to 99% in 2009, while the woman participation in the social, economic and political decision-making has remarkably increased.

Syria has been able to decrease the average of kid and infant deaths from 41% per 1000 in 1993 to 18% in 2008 due to programs of vaccine, while the average of mother deaths has decreased from 107 deaths per 100.000 in 1993 to 56 deaths in 2008.

The report shows that Syria has succeeded to stop the spread of the malaria disease and decreased the percentage of AIDS cases, estimated at 0.1 % in 2005. Syria's efforts continued to decrease the death rate of tuberculosis.

Concerning environmental sustainability, data indicate that the government has set a plan to increase the percentage of forests, which are decreasing, by 3.86% by 2015.

The report indicated that Syria has made great progress in dealing with its foreign debts. Syria could decrease them through a percentage of exports from 22% in 1990 to 5.2% in 2007, allowing for more flexibility in increasing resources to achieve the millennium development goals.

The report focuses on the progress Syria has made in human development from 1990 to 2009 to realize the millennium development goals by 2015 in implementation of the UN declaration and the conference held in it in 2000 with the participation of 180 countries.

The conference resolutions stipulated for achieving a number of specified objectives to improve the living conditions, comprehensive preparatory education, boosting equality between the two genders, enhancing the role of women, decreasing children death rates and combating AIDS and Malaria.

Head of Human development Department at the State Planning Commission Rifaat Hijazi said "the report demonstrates that the developmental goals of the millennium can be achieved by 2015, there are some challenges the government is trying to deal with", pointing out that several developmental indications have achieved remarkable progress.

For his part, Resident Coordinator of the UN Activities in Damascus Ismael Weld al-Sheikh Ahmad said the general objective of the national report on the millennium development goals for 2010 is to inspect the progress Syria has made in achieving the development goals of the millennium, shed the light on the new facts that has an impact and deal with the strategic policies to achieve the developmental goals of the millennium by 2015.
