UN Office for Humanitarian: Kuwait posts highest Arab, Muslim donation to Pakistan

GENEVA, - The UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) declared on Friday Kuwait has the highest Arab and Islamic contribution to date for the flood victims of Pakistan, with a payment of USD five million.

The media spokesperson of the OCHA said in a press conference here that the international aid agencies working in Pakistan received just only 20 percent of the total USD 460 million required by the UN agencies to face the repercussions of the disaster.

She stressed that the obtained amounts cover only 24 percent of the funds required for food security, only seven percent of the requirements of health care, eight percent of the costs of providing temporary accommodation and materials for daily life, 10 percent of the budget allocated to water supply and public health.

While there is no money to cover the costs of protection, transport, communication and coordination between the various actors.

It warned the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent from a widening gap between the needs on the ground and the resources currently available, with a further aggravation of the crisis. The experts of the ICRC said that the continuation of seasonal rains, the displacement of about 14 million people and destruction of more than 700 000 houses are all factors that will make the victims depend on food aid and emergency relief items in the coming months.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said more than half a million families currently in need for temporary shelters for at least three months at a cost of about USD 38 million including the consumption of everyday life. The IOM expects the worst in the coming period as 73 of Pakistan's 125 districts had been affected by the floods with a massive damage to the country's infrastructure and livelihoods.
