Jordan increasing fruit and vegetable exports to Ukraine
Jordan (Amman) – Jordan Minister of Agriculture Mazen Khasawneh on Sunday discussed with Ukrainian ambassador Sergey Pasko prospects for boosting trade and agricultural cooperation between the two countries, reports Petra.

The two sides also tackled ways and means of increasing Jordanian fruit and vegetable exports to Ukraine and facilitate the flow of farm produce between the two countries.

Seeds, vegetable oils and livestock are the bulk of Jordanian imports from Ukraine while vegetables and fruits are the Kingdom's major exports.

Jordan Valley Farmers are experiencing a severe lack of rainfall and urgent steps are needed to expand the area covered by greenery and promote the efficient use of water, environmentalists say, according to IRIN.

Jordan does not have lakes or rivers except for the River Jordan, which faces water scarcity in its basin. The kingdom’s water supply depends on dams or underground reservoirs that collect water during winter.

Experts say most of the country’s water reserves come from rain that falls in December and January, but this year there are problems:

Jordan Valley has 45,000 hectares of arable land of which 27,500 are cultivated. The country imports some foodstuffs to meet its needs. Wheat and barley are the main crops of the rain-fed uplands, and irrigated land in the Jordan Valley produces citrus and other fruits, potatoes, vegetables (tomatoes and cucumbers), and olives.
Pastureland is limited; although artesian wells have been dug to increase its area, much former pasture area has been turned over to the cultivation of olive and fruit trees, and large areas have been degraded to the point that they can barely support livestock.
