Solar energy station to generate 140 megawatts in Egypt
Egypt to operate first solar energy station to generate electricity. The station will be one of only four stations of this kind all over the world, adding the capacity of this station is 140 megawatts and will be linked to the National network.

Egypt Minister of Electricity and Energy, Eng. Hassan Younis held a meeting yesterday with officials and leaderships of the sector of electricity for discussing means of overcoming the problems of power outage.

During the meeting, the Minister instructed the chairmen of 16 electricity generation and distribution companies to suspend all maintenance works in all projects until after the summer season. The Minister ordered suspending electricity export at the peak hours in which local consumption increases. The Minister ordered the formation of working group for following up performance of generating units and solving any problems that appear during the operation of units.

He said the policy of the sector of electricity is to diversify the sources of energy and not to depend on a certain source for fear of its exhaust. He said electricity is currently being generated from water and traditional sources, adding preparations are underway for operating the first station for generating electricity from solar energy. He said this station will be one of only four stations of this kind all over the world, adding the capacity of this station is 140 megawatts and will be linked to the National network.

Younis said Talkha and Al-Attf Power Generating Stations have been built, adding their aggregate capacity is 1500 megawatts. He said these two stations will be linked to the national network for electricity, adding these two stations will help overcome the problems of overloads in future.

On ways of confronting power outage in some governorates, the Minister said there is much improvement in service, thanks to citizens response to efforts to rationalize power consumption during the peak hours (two hours from sunset in Ramadan timing). The Minister of Electricity said in order to overcome overloads, the coming few days will witness the operation of thermal unit at Nubareya station with a total capacity of 250 megawatts, and the sixth unit of the High Dam Turbines at a capacity of 175 megawatts.

The Minister also referred to the establishment of Zaafarana wind farm that generates 120 megawatts and the operation of the seventh unit of West Cairo station with a capacity of 350 megawatts. He said aggregate capacity that will be added to the national network in 2010 will reach 2660 megawatts, adding these capacities will satisfy citizens everyday needs.
