Jordan public debt rises up to $ 14 billion, 52 % of GDP

Jordan (Amman) - Jordan's public debt rose to $ 14 billion (JD10.1 billion) at the end of May, up by JD421.6 million compared with the end of 2009, according to official figures.

The data by the ministry of finance showed that the net public debt (internal and external) edged up to JD10.081 billion comprising 52 percent of estimated Gross Domestic Product GDP compared with JD9.660 billion; the figure at the end of 2009.

The ministry explained in a report released today that the debt hike was a result of an increase in the total domestic debt of the central government, and independent institutions.

It said that JD175 million were used to finance the state budget deficit during the first six months of the year.

The report also attributed the increase in the public debt to the issuance of the Decent Housing for Decent Living and Water Authority bonds.
