Qatar Telecom to invest in new services
Qatar (Doha) - Qatar Telecom (Qtel) plans to invest in new services, enhance subscriber support and reaffirmed its ambitions to continue in its role as the preferred network service provider in Qatar, the company top executive told QNA.

Chief Executive Officer of Qtel Dr Nasser Marafih, said, "Qtel''s regional and international success is built upon the firm foundations we have laid in Qatar. We continue to enjoy stability and sustainable development because of the strong support we receive from the people of Qatar. In the face of competition, we continue to win new customers and develop new services which in turn contribute to the wider growth of our group."

Earlier this week, Qtel reported robust financial results for the first of the year. Qtel Group revenues jumped by 13.7% at QR 13.1 billion. Net profit attributable to Qtel shareholders at the end of H1 2010 was QR 1.8bn while in the corresponding period in 2009 it was QR 1.6bn. The Group''s consolidated customer base was 66.6 million as against 51.4 million in H1 2009.

"We will continue to re-invest the rewards of our hard work into Qatar to provide opportunities, innovation and financial stability to our customers and stakeholders," said Dr Marafih.

Qtel's presence in Qatar has helped stimulate innovation across the whole Group, he said. The company is currently working to roll out an ambitious fibre-to-the-home nationwide project that will offer advanced Internet speeds to users.

It is also developing a new range of mobile services that include mobile commerce and mobile music applications. Currently more than 50,000 people in Qatar use mobile broadband solutions via Qtel network using smart phones, laptops, gaming consoles and other wi-fi enabled devices.
