Lebanon - Strict measures to prevent environmental pollution

Lebanon - Labour minister, Boutros Harb, called upon concerned authorities to strictly supervise environmental pollution and work on controlling that to protect citizens' health and animal wealth.

Minister Harb remarks came in comment on the issues of, the fire that broke out on Monday inside a vessel loaded with sulphuric material off Selaata coast and the dead cows found off Al-Batroun and Jounieh coast on Tuesday. Harb thanked God that they were able on Monday to avoid a huge environmental catastrophe after civil defense members succeeded in extinguishing the vessel fire with the least damage possible.

Harb also called industrial companies in the region to pay close attention to the environmental status in order to avoid additional pollution to that the region is already suffering from.

He also asked public prosecution to open investigation concerning the issue of the dead cows which were found off Al-Batroun and Jounieh coast because "the presence of dead cows in the sea is not a coincidence but a result of a criminal act" and pursue those who committed such an act.

Harb asked each of Justice, Interior and Municipalities, and Environment ministers to accord the issue high importance, reveal the doers and ask security apparatuses to re-supervise and control such contraventions.
