UAE (Abu Dhabi) -  HH Lt.General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has instructed the Abu Dhabi Police to offer logistical support to relief and rescue operations in floods-affected areas in Pakistan, reports WAM.

Sheikh Saif is acting upon instructions given by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to step up relief programmes to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Pakistan.

Towards this end, the Abu Dhabi Police has allowed free entry of the team from the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) via Abu Dhabi International Airport and handed them advanced satellite telecommunications systems to help the team access to critical on time data for humanitarian relief operations.

Major Mohammed Abdul Jalil Al Ansari, Field Liaison Officer with the UN, said the Abu Dhabi Police's Central Operations had coordinated with the Foreign Ministry to facilitate entry of the UNDAC team into the country without prior visas.

''The UN team was welcomed at Abu Dhabi International Airport and provided with the state-of-the-art satellite-based telecommunication equipments and shock/water/dust resistant computers to facilitate their travel to the affected country,''he added.

''The UAE was the first country in the world to offer such logistical support.
Our embassy in Pakistan has also welcomed the UN team and secured its safe entry into Pakistani territories by securing in a record time all security and technical permits for using these devices,''he indicated.

Al Ansari said this humanitarian work comes within the framework of the UAE commitment to international conventions dealing with bilateral cooperation towards humanitarian facilities. It also demonstrates our leadership's determination in giving a helping hand to all humanitarian works in various parts of the world.

He remarked that many UN agencies paid special tribute to the UAE for its humanitarian support at times of disasters worldwide.

The UN organisations lauded the UAE as a shining model for humanitarian and relief world that merits to be emulated in future.

Al Ansari said the UAE humanitarian model will be reviewed at the inaugural International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) Global Meeting will be held in Kobe, Japan from 14 -16 Sept. 2010.
