Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey - Cooperation in scientific research

Syria (Damascus) –  Cooperation programs set up between Egypt, Lebanon, Syria andTurkey in fields of scientific research are considered to be among the most important partnerships on the level of research establishments in these countries. These programs aim at fulfilling the social needs and achieving the national development plans.

The Lebanese-Syrian cooperation program, launched in 2001, aims to accomplish scientific research programs which focus on common problems in the two countries, Syrian Scientific Research Director Lamya Youssef said.

As for cooperation with Egypt, Youssef said that a timetable has been set to accept project titles till October 14th, adding that this year two titles have been added; the first is biotechnology, medical and pharmaceutical technologies, while the second one is renewable energy.

Syria and Egypt signed a technological and scientific cooperation agreement on December 23rd, 2003 to establish a joint fund to achieve technological and scientific cooperation activities.

Regarding the Syrian-Turkish cooperation, Youssef pointed out to the outcome of the two scientific research forums between Syria and Turkey held in Aleppo and Istanbul.

The Syrian-Turkish research projects are about 35 projects, including 12 from Damascus University, 10 from Aleppo University, 6 from Tishreen University, 6 from al-Baath University and 6 from the Euphrates University on electronics, genetics, biotechnology, energy, agriculture and food.

It is worth mentioning that Scientific research in Syria has become an urgent need in order to enable the society overcome the challenges it is facing in several fields and evaluate the performance of the productive sectors.

Scientific cooperation programs link Syria with numerous Arab and foreign countries supported by a series of decrees and laws to set up the legal frame and administrative and financial mechanism to organize cooperation with national and foreign scientific establishments.
