Egypt to boost exports to Africa

As the global economy battles to recover from the impact of the financial slowdown, Egypt is moving further toward Africa with the aim to boost exports to the continent.

It is part of a national strategy to tap African markets that serve more than 840 million people, said Trade Minister Rasheed Mohamed Rashid who is attending a COMESA summit.

The summit, which wrapped up earlier Wednesday, lobbied for a merger between COMESA and the regional communities of SADAC and EGAD; something Egypt fully supports, Rasheed told senior African officials after the summit.

He made it clear that President Hosni Mubarak is keen on enhancing relations with African states, particularly members of COMESA, which, he added, is pivotal to Africa's integration.

Egypt is also keen on improving economic cooperation with Nile Basin countries, Rashid added. Cooperation with Africa tops Egypt's foreign policy priorities, the minister noted.
