Oman, India discuss health, education, transport and communications cooperation

The 6th session of the Omani-Indian Joint Committee meetings began at the Commerce and Industry Ministry . The Omani side was led by Maqbool bin Ali bin Sultan, Commerce and Industry Minister while the Indian side was led by Anand Sharma, Commerce and Industry Minister of the Republic of India.

Maqbool bin Ali bin Sultan, Commerce and Industry Minister said that the meetings will discuss a number of topics related to cooperation in the trade, economic, investment, industrial and tourism fields, as well as, cooperation in the fields of small and medium enterprises, manufacturing, knowledge-based industries, information technology, training the Omani youth in the economic and developmental fields, inter-trade and joint investments.

In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Maqbool added that the meetings will also discuss cooperation in the health field by training the Omani graduates in India in various medical disciplines and exchange of visits between doctors in the two friendly countries and cooperation in the field of education and higher education by the exchange of visits by the concerned people and benefiting from the Indian experience in the innovative methods in teaching, particularly language and computer training, while  cooperation in the craft industries field will be through benefiting from the services of some experts and holding seminars, lectures, exhibitions and joint activities to promote the craft industries sector.

The Minister of Commerce and Industry pointed out that the meetings will also discuss cooperation in the field of transport and communications through benefiting from the experiences of the Indian side in the field of designing, planning, construction and safety of roads and bridges. The two sides also discussed the draft MoU in the field of maritime  transportation and inviting the private sector in both countries to set up trade and marine lines that connect the ports in both countries and benefiting from the Indian experience in the filed of maritime transportation. The two sides will also discuss the articles of the MoU signed between the two parties to regularize the land transportation services and the possibility of utilizing 10,000 additional seats to the current capacity of the Omani side, granting new transportation rights for Oman Air to Mangalore, Ahmadabad, Trichi and Calcutta, in addition to, discussing a number of issues related to facilitating the Oman Air's operations in India.

He pointed out that the meetings will also discuss the cooperation in the field of agriculture, fisheries, oil, gas, petrochemicals and cooperation in the field of environment and climate affairs by benefiting from the Indian experiences in the field of implementing anti desertification projects. They will also discussed means of increasing the framework of the trade, economic, investment, higher education and training relations, in addition to, finding proper solutions for the hindrances and easing difficulties.

As for the trade exchange between the Sultanate and the Republic of India, Maqbool bin Ali Sultan said that the study on the trade volume during 2008 and 2009 pointed out to a 4.5% increase in the reciprocal trade in 2009 compared to 2008. He pointed out that the value of the Omani exports to India amounted to RO.932.2 million in 2009 compared to RO.366.7 million in 2008. The value of Omani imports from Indian amounted to RO.404.6 million in 2009 compared to RO.400.6 million in 2008.

The opening session was attended from the Omani side by Sheikh Humaid bin Ali bin Sultan al Ma'ani, the Sultanate's ambassador to the friendly Republic of Indian, Dr. Salim bin Nasser al Ismaili, CEO of the OCIPED and a number of officials at the governmental departments +members of the Committee+ and from the Indian side by the Indian ambassador to the Sultanate, members of the official  and private sector delegation accompanying the Commerce and Industry Minister of India.
