Syria, UNDP Sign Agreements to Support Environment and Development

Syria (Damascus) – UNEP Project Support Program on Sunday signed three agreements with Deir Ezzor Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Environment Protection and Sustainable Development Association and Deir Mar Yaacoup (St. Jacob Monastery) in Qara, Damascus Countryside.

The agreements, signed in the framework of the Small Grants Program of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), aim to support environment projects.

The agreement signed with Deir Ezzor Chamber of Commerce and Industry targets a project on protecting underground water resources and supporting local communities to get natural water resources through rehabilitating the ancient Roman wells in the southeastern region.

The total cost of the project is about USD 90,000. The UNDP Project Support Program will contribute to about USD 21,600, while the GEF Small Grants Program will contribute by USD 48,880, and the Deir Ezzor Chamber by USD 12,840.

The project of the Environment Protection and Sustainable Development Association aims at launching an awareness campaign on the bad effects of organic pollutants on human health and environment.

The total cost of the project is USD 58,000. USD 48,000 will be funded by the Small Grants Program and the Association will contribute by USD 10,000.

The project which will be carried out by Deir Mar Yaacoup aims at boosting the management, production and processing of 50 kinds of medical plants already being cultivated in the area.

The total cost of the project is about USD 146,850. The Small Grants Program will pay USD 50,000 and Deir Mar Yaacoup will pay USD 20,000 in cash and USD 76,870 in kind.

The GEF's Small Grants Program, established in 1992, has been working in Syria since 2005 in supporting the environment activities of civil societies.
