Oman: Price stability for major foods during Ramadan

Oamn (Muscat) - The latest consumer price data issued by Ministry of National Economy shows price stability for most of the major foodstuff during the third and fourth weeks of August (the first and second weeks of the holy month of Ramadan) compared to the price average registered in the first and second weeks of August in the markets of Muscat Governorate.

The data showed stability in the prices of the fresh and frozen meat and chicken. The prices of beef, frozen lamb and fresh mutton remained unchanged while the fresh lamb rose by (0.5%). The prices of most types of rice decreased as Indian and Pakistani Basmati rice decreased by (0.1% - 7.1%) while the other types of rice remained unchanged. The flour prices also remained unchanged but the prices of most types of fish rose during the first and second weeks of Ramadhan, compared to the price average of the week prior to Ramadhan as sardine, spotted grouper, Gaither, Saima, king fish recorded the highest rise in prices by (45.4%, 13.7%, 7.2%, 3.2% and 3%) successively, meanwhile, the prices of cod fish and tuna declined by 8% and 6.3% respectively.

The data also showed that prices of most the milk and dairy products were fluctuating as some types remained unchanged while the others decreased some others rose during the first and second weeks of the Holy Month of Ramadhan compared to the two weeks that preceded Ramandhan. Fresh milk rose by 0.2%, powder milk rose by 0.2% - 1.4% while yogurt prices decreased by 1.7% and the long-life milk and condensed milk decreased by 0.7% and 0.4% successively. For the prices of egg, the prices of the local egg remained unchanged.

The prices of oils and fats showed that the corn oil decreased by (1.4% - 2.1%) while the ghee prices mainly remained unchanged. For the dry beans, most of the prices remained unchanged excluding the lentil prices that decreased by 0.1%. Loose sugar decreased during the first and second weeks of the Holy Month of Ramadhan by 3.3% compared to the prices of the two weeks preceding Ramadhan. The prices of tea and coffee category increased by (0.4% - 1.2%) and the prices ready-made coffee increased by (0.3% - 5.7%) while some products of this category slightly decreased and some others remained unchanged.

The prices in this holy month of Ramadhan 1431AH compared to the prices of the previous holy month of Ramadhan 1430AH, it noted that the foodstuff rose during the first and second weeks of Ramadhan 1431AH compared to the same period last Ramadhan 1430AH as the prices of mackerel, Saima and sardine fish rose by (9.9%) ,  (13.6%) and (24.7%) successively.

For the meat category, the prices of the fresh lamb rose by (7.4%), the fresh mutton rose by (14.5%) and the frozen lamb rose by (30.9%). The prices of the condensed milk rose by (10.4%), the powder milk rose by (9.6%) - (16.1%).

The local egg prices rose by (6.2%) - (15.8%). The prices of the loose sugar rose by (32.1%), the loose tea also rose by (8%) - (12.5%) while the packed tea rose by (5.6%) - (9%). The prices of tuna and Cod decreased during the first and second weeks of this Ramadhan by (21.6%) - (14.4%) compared to the same period last Ramadhan 1430AH.

The prices of frozen chicken decreased by (8.7%) - (9.8%), and the prices of Indian Basmati rice decreased by (16%) and the Pakistani Basmati rice decreased by (12%) - (20.9%) while the loose coffee decreased by (7.9%) and the ready-made coffee decreased by (7%). The prices of oil also slightly decreased.
