Shift in organizing permissions - Oman to issue Hajj Smart Card
Oman (Muscat) - A press conference was held today in the premises of the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs about Hajj Smart Card Agreement that is signed by the ministry on September 1st with Artech Co. in the presence of officials from the ministry and the company.

Sultan bin Said al Hinai, Assistant Director General of Preaching and Guidance Department at the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs stated during the press conference that the ministry is concerned about the use of the modern technology and applying the same in its programmes and services for the sake of facilitating the use of them by the nationals and offering best quality and efficiency.

Al Hinai added that the use of the Hajj Smart Card would be considered as a qualitative shift in organizing the issue of Hajj permissions, indicating that the agreement that would last for one Hijri year reads that the ministry would undertake the management of the project in cooperation and coordination with Artech for registering the pilgrims and campaign organizers. In addition, the company would provide the necessary technical support, as well as, the equipment and appliances needed for operating the system.

The ministry's IT department has been using the electronic registration for pilgrims throughout the ministry's website five years ago but the ministry thought of using the smart card system to provide better technology and higher features.

It is worth mentioning that the smart card is distinguished by its high security features including the use of the ultraviolet printing, hologram, microscopic printing, as well as, enabling the pilgrimage organizers to identify the regular pilgrims throughout the security features that are taken from the front of the card, in addition to, the ability to get electronic copy of the pilgrim list to the land crossing points controlled by Royal Oman Police (ROP).

The smart cards would also enable the campaign organizers to register the pilgrims at any time from any place without the need to connect to the internet during the registration period
