Moratinos: A good relation with Morocco is vital to Spain's interests

Madrid - A good relation with Morocco is vital to the interests of Spain, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said on Wednesday, underlining that his government is working, since it assumed power, to maintain "a flexible and excellent policy" with its neighbor.

The government's policy lies in having a flexible and excellent policy with Morocco, a partner and an ally, which is vital to Spain's interests, said the minister before the Spanish Congress of Deputies (lower house).

The Kingdom of Morocco is crucial for Spain not only at the economic level, but also in terms of security, the fight against illegal immigration and terrorism, he added.

The Spanish executive has adopted a comprehensive policy in dealing with Morocco, he noted, recalling that, paradoxically, there was no good relations with Morocco or France when the socialists took office in 2004.

The Spanish government is eager to pursue this policy not only with Morocco, but also with the Maghreb countries through the search for a solution to the Sahara issue and better relations with the region's countries, Moratinos said, stressing that the government will continue this "State's policy".
