Syria (Damascus) - Saudi Ambassador in Damascus Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Ayfan on Wednesday underlined that the special relations binding Syria and Saudi Arabia have been built on solid basis, Global Arab Network reports according to Syrian sources.

In a statement to SANA on the occasion of Saudi Arabia National Day, Al-Ayfan said the Syrian-Saudi relations gained a new momentum after the visit of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Syria in October 2009 and President al-Assad's visit to Saudi Arabia in the March 2009.

This constant communication and the close relation between the Saudi King and President al-Assad is an example to follow by the Arab leaderships, and a solid basis for the standing relations between the two countries, the Ambassador said.

He underlined that Saudi Arabia appreciates Syria's key role on the Arab, Islamic and international levels, pointing out that the cooperation between the two countries has been reflected positively on many Arab issues, on top of which the situation in Lebanon and Iraq and the Palestinian issue.

The Ambassador said that the joint visit of President of al-Assad and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Lebanon has stepped up the exerted efforts for achieving stability and security in the country, stressing that the two leaders will exert more efforts, serving the best interest of the Arab nation and its causes.

He indicated that the Syrian-Saudi relations have witnessed remarkable steps in the economic, cultural and social domains, adding that the bilateral cooperation has been translated through signing several agreements in addition to the meetings between officials from both countries.

The Ambassador expressed satisfaction over the increase in trade exchange volume between the two countries which hit USD 2 billions in 2009 in addition to the joint investments which amounted to USD 1 billions as the Saudi investments rank first among the Arab investments in Syria.

Al-Ayfan indicated that the number of the Saudi projects in Syria has reached 25 with a cost estimated at SYP 69billions( 1USD= 46 SYP ) while the number of the joint projects hit 421, adding that the Saudi Development Fund has financed a lot of the vital projects in Syria over the past decades.

The two countries are linked by a trade agreement for activating trade exchange between them in addition to an agreement on establishing a joint free-trade zone in Damascus in 2010.

Several meetings of Syrian-Saudi Committees were held last March as well as the 1st Syrian-Saudi Businessmen Council, during which five significant agreements, minutes and memos of understanding were signed between the two sides.
