Tunisia (Tunis)  - The International conference on "Arab Women in the Face of Challenges of the Information Society" opened its works on Monday morning, in Tunis, reports Global Arab Network according TAP.

The Conference, held by the Arab Information and Communication Technologies Organisation (AICTO), aims to thoroughly look at means that would help reinforce equality between men and women, and assist Arab women, notably through the multiple uses of information and communication technologies (ICTs), to fully play their role in stimulating their countries' development processes and in developing a lasting information society.

The agenda of the Conference includes three main sessions devoted to "Women's Right of Access to ICTs," "Narrowing the Digital Divide between Men and Women: Realities and Prospects," "ICTs, Pillars of Women's Economic and Social Promotion," and a round-table meeting on "ICTs, Promising Horizons for Arab Women."

Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs Minister Bébia Bouhnek Chihi pointed out, on the occasion, that organising this event under the high auspices of wife of the President of the Republic, Mrs. Leila Ben Ali, testifies anew to the importance lent by the Arab Women Organisation (AWO) Chairwoman, under the impulse of President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, to access modernity, command technologies and forge ahead on the path of building up the knowledge society on solid and fair foundations.

Mrs. Chihi specified that Tunisian women's presence in the ICTs field has recorded an important development, with a 50-per-cent rise in the number of female students in ICTs specialties out of the total number of students. The number of female graduates in these specialties reached 47% and the rate of these specialties' women teachers stands at 42% out of the total of teachers in Tunisian universities.

The number of female employees in public establishments involved in these specialties represents one third of all workers in this area.

For her part, Arab Communication and Information Technologies Organisation Secretary-General Khadija Ghariani paid tribute to the efforts and initiatives of the First Lady, since the beginning of her AWO presidency, to improve the Arab women's status in the various fields, notably the scientific ones.

She said that this Conference is held a few days before the summit on reviewing "Millennium Development Goals." AWO Director-General Wadouda Badrane laid emphasis on the importance of taking into account the values of justice and equality between the two sexes, within the framework of technological progress reached in Arab countries, in order to improve the conditions of Arab women who are suffering in several countries from marginalisation in the sciences and technologies sectors.

Besides, she pointed out that the Arab Women Organisation ranks this issue on top of its concerns, so as to develop women's potentialities and make the most of progress and modernity.
