Omani Sudanese Forum enhancing trade and economic cooperation

Oman (Muscat) - The Omani Sudanese Forum was held today at Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry HQs' on the sidelines of the visit by Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Ahmed Al Khidhir, Wali of the wilayat of Khartoum and his accompanying delegation currently visiting the Sultanate.

Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Khidhir said that his visit to the Sultanate comes in a bid to enhance the cooperation relations between the Sultanate and the Republic of Sudan , enhance the cooperation in economic and trade fields and develop them to serve the interests of both countries.

In his speech, he added that the wilayat of Khartoum welcomes investment in all fields, especially the agricultural fields as the wilayat is the meeting point for the White Nile and the Blue Nile. He pointed out that the investments will solve many food , population and job seekers issues hoping that the investment pace will be accelerated.

He added that a trade delegation from the wilayat of Khartoum will visit the Sultanate at the end of next December to discuss enhancing the bilateral economic and trade cooperation and aspects of joint investment.

On his part, Khalil bin Abdullah al Khunji, Chairman of OCCI said that the Sultanate has availed the effective economic environment for developing businesses through availing packages of investments and facilities. The Sultanate also approved a number of laws that encourage and secure investments regardless of their source. The Sultanate is also known for its strategic location, political stability, sound infrastructure, abundant economic resources and many lucrative potential investment opportunities in different economic fields and activities, he furthered.

While delivering his speech, al Khunji added that OCCI is looking forward to benefiting from these incentives and facilities in enhancing the horizons of joint cooperation with Sudanese businessmen through activation of the role of the Omani-Sudanese Joint Business Council, set up in February 1999. It is also looking forward to benefiting from the joint cooperation agreements, such as, the agreement on encouraging and protecting investments, which was signed in October 1999 and the avoidance of double taxation and evasion of income tax, which was signed in June 2003.

OCCI Chairman also said that OCCI seeks to exchange trade, investment information, as well as, experiences in the prioritized fields and sectors in the development plans in both countries. It also seeks to enhance the communication channels among the private sector establishments and individuals in both countries, as well as, taking part at the economic events. He affirmed that OCCI dedicates its efforts and resources to support the horizons of cooperation and partnership between the two countries in the coming period.

On the other hand, Eng. Saleh al Shanfari, Chairman of the Omani side at the Omani-Sudanese Businessmen Council stressed the importance of activating the role of the Council in the coming period, as well as, benefiting from the good relations that link the two countries in developing the business, trade and investment sector in both countries.

After this the investment commissioner in the wilayat of Khartoum presented a working paper that cover the major laws that regularize investment in the wilaya, the major incentives, facilities and services provided to local and foreign investors, as well as, the major available investment opportunities in the wilayat of Khartoum.
