Arab region: Anti-poverty policies to reach 2015 targets

Kuwait - An economic study indicated that there were enough financial and manpower resources in the Arab region to reach development-related targets by 2015, and that policies to tackle poverty, more than any other time before require revision.

The study conducted by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and printed in the October edition of its magazine 'Al-Sondouq', mentioned that around 70 percent of the poorest Arabs live in rural areas.

The averages of famine have not decreased between 1990 and 2004 as a result of the limited availability of lands, the affect of weather conditions on agriculture and the lack of significance placed on the agricultural sector.

The study added that this needs larger efforts in order to usher forward growth, which requires financial support.

Mentioning facts and numbers, the study said that the Arab labour market increases 3.5 percent annually, thus requiring the availability of 31 million jobs in the coming 10 years.

It also said that unemployment mostly affects those of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, encouraging the further growth of projects of broader opportunities.
