Sudan (KHARTOUM) - The GCC Chief called on the Sudanese to cooperate constructively to create an adequate atmosphere for the upcoming public referendum that would determine destiny of natives of southern Sudan.

The member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council will respect results of the referendum, due in January, said Abdul-Rahman Al-Attiah in a statement to journalists here.

Unity is the best option for all nations of the world because it entails rally of efforts and resources for development, said the chief of the GCC that comprises six states; Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Bahrain and Qatar.

"We also respect the concord among the Sudanese, embodied in the peace treaty, stipulating the holding of the referendum," Al-Attiah added, hoping that it would be held amid cooperation and dialogue among the Sudanese.

Al-Attiah added that his current visit to Sudan was aimed at holding talks with ranking leaders on expanding scope of cooperation between Sudan and the GCC states.

"We have always supported the security and stability and unity of Sudan. We also back dialogue among the various political parties and the peace treaty that had ended the internal war," Al-Attiah re-emphasized.

On the donors conference due in Kuwait soon, Al-Attiah, who would take part in the convention, reacted with a call on wealthy nations to support development in east Sudan. He also urged governments and individuals to invest in projects, expected to be promoted at the Kuwait conference.

He renewed the GCC support for the Qatari role for resolving the Darfur crisis.

The GCC chief is currently in Sudan for taking part in the Islamic ministerial conference for food security.
