Oman: Integrated Waste Management System Project to Protect Public Health

Oman (Salalah) - The company tasked with consultancy works for the Integrated Waste Management System project in the Governorate of Dhofar completed 60% of field surveys related to types of solid waste in the governorate, its estimate quantities and basics currently followed in its management.

Eng. Abdulqadir bin Ahmed al Hadad, Deputy Head of Dhofar Municipality and member of Oman Environmental Services Holding Company's Board pointed out that awarding this vital project by the government, represented by the company comes to complete efforts targeting the protection of public health aspects in the community.  The municipality's waste management as per the internationally approved systems, legislations and regulations is one of the basic pillars upon which the integrated series of waste management depends on.

In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Eng. al Hadad praised efforts and cooperation of governmental and national departments, as well as, citizens with the company executing the project through facilitating mission of the team specialized to collect field data in some wilayats of the governorate, which were covered by the study in the current stage, namely Salalah, Mirbat, Taqah, Dhalkout and Rakhyout.  He added that the surveys will extend during the forthcoming days to cover other wilayats of the governorate, namely Thumrait, Al Mazyounah, Maqshan, Shleem and Al Halaneyat Islands.

Eng. Azhar bin Haroon al Kindi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Oman Environmental Services Holding Company pointed out that there are themes to be included in the study, such as, recycling waste, which is considered one of the mechanisms followed by various countries of the world that aims at minimizing depletion of natural resources, as well as, introducing waste again in industry and production with taking into consideration that the environmental aspect remains the most important motivation to such systems and waste.

Eng. al Kindi said that the matter of recycling waste will be focused in the consultancy study project for the integrated system in the Governorate of Dhofar as it is considered one of major industries that achieves good economic revenue, in addition to, cooperation of the governmental and private sectors, finding actual partnership in the field, so that the private sector's investments pertaining to waste will cover important aspects, such as, treatment plants, re-cycling plastic materials, organic fertilizers projects, power generation projects by burning waster among other projects.

Meanwhile, Eng. Ahmed bin Huboosh al Farsi, Director of the project said that the consultancy study for the Integrated Waste Management System in the Governorate of Dhofar includes five main themes, namely studying the current status of waste management in the governorate, familiarizing with financial expenses related to the system, laying down scientific basics pertaining to amending the system to meet the enforced local and international regulations, acquainting with projects and fields that can be introduced to the private sector and finally laying down a draft for a general tender as per the appropriate technical, legal and financial standards, which is expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2011 as it is planned. Achieving about 60% of field works related to the project during this short period is a good indication that the project will be implemented during the fixed period.
