Morocco: Unemployment Down to 9% in 2010

Morocco (Rabat) - Unemployment rate fell to 9% in the third quarter of 2010, from 9.8% in the same period in 2009, thanks to the creation of 93,000 job opportunities, Morocco's statistics office, the high commissioner for planning (HCP), said.

In urban centers, the rate decreased from 14.8 to 13.8%, while in rural areas it stood at 3.8%, down from 4.3%, the HCP said in a publication on the job market in the third quarter of 2010.

Morocco’s active population reached 11,323,000 in the third quarter of 2010, that is a 0.1% increase compared to the same period in 2009, the HCP added.

The total volume of employment increased from 10,209,000 to stand at 10,302,000, the same source said, noting that the new created 93,000 job opportunities include 36,000 in urban centers and 57,000 in rural areas.
