GCC information ministers announce joint Gulf media strategy

Kuwait - Eighteenth meeting of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Information Ministers reviewed here Thursday the draft GCC media strategy (2010-2020), then reached a consensus on it following deliberations, reports Global Arab Network according to KUNA.

The ministers also agreed upon submitting the draft strategy to the upcoming preparatoy session of the GCC Council of the Ministers of Information to pave the way to its final presentation to the GCC Supreme Council in its 31st edition due in the Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi.

Further, the meeting which was presided over by Minister of information, who doubles as Minister of Oil, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah resulted in issuing decisions and recommendations on the GCC media affairs.

The meeting deemed the GCC media strategy a frame of reference that guides the GCC states when activating the joint media action committees and their role in boosting cooperation among the GCC states.

It also regarded the strategy as a holistic intellectual framework that enables the media apparatuses in the GCC states to promote their roles and further increase the cooperation opportunities with other world countries in what achieves GCC goals toward development and growth.

The meeting decided that GCC various media committees should work through its periodical meetings and workshops toward translating the concepts of the draft strategy into programs and practical projects according to their respective jurisdictions.

As for the negative impact of mass media on children, the ministers scrutinized the note of the general secretariat on the resolution made by the 30th edition of the GCC Supreme Council on the recommendations issued by the satellite channels and the value and moral challenge faced by youth in the GCC states.

The ministers were also briefed on the reports and recommendations issued by latest three meetings held in Riyadh and Kuwait by the standing coordination committee in the field of satelllite channels and youth.

The GCC Information Ministers also reviewed the General Secretariat note on cooperation among the GCC states and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), especially the decision made by the Ministerial Council in its 116th edition in Jeddah on approving ASEAN's proposal on holding the first meeting of the working of culture and media on the Nov. 12 in Singapore.

They also agreed on the GCC states' participation in the meeting in order to explore the opportunities and fields of cooperation between the two sides and that GCC delegation will hold a coordination meeting before their joint meeting with ASEAN.

The GCC ministers also reviewed the general secretariat not on the GCC Cultural Days in Europe and were briefed on the coordination between the general secretariat and Kuwait's embassy in Seoul with the aim of holding the GCC Days in South Korea next February.

The ministers also hailed the efforts made by the embassies of GCC members states and GCC General Secretariat in carrying out such days and putting it out in the best form, asserting the importance of intensifying the cultural activities associated with it.

On Yemen's desire to join the Joint Program Production Institution (JPPI), the GCC ministers discussed the GCC General Secretariat note in this respect and were briefed on the approvals of GCC state members of Sanaa's demand, and consequently agreed upon submitting a recommendation to the miniterial council in its upcoming session in order to approve Yemen's accession according to the mechanisms applied to Yemen's participation in similar organizations.

Regarding the media approach to health issues, the GCC ministers agreed on reasserting the pivotal role of health media in further strengthening the achievements made by the GCC in all fields, including the health cooperation among the GCC states.

The GCC ministers also approved the proposals embedded in the blueprint on the media handling of health issues that were attached to decision 8 in the 68th conference of the Council of GCC Health Ministers that was held in the Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi last February.

They also called on health agencies in the GCC states to make use of the Joint Program Production Institution (JPPI) on producing educational media programs in the field of health and providing necessary financial support to such programs by the above-mentioned agencies.

The ministers also reviewed the recommendations made by the 20th, 21st and 22nd meetings of the GCC external media officials and agreed upon passing them.

They also took note of the report of the executive director of the JPPI and hailed the support that JPPI receives from its chairman, Kuwaiti Minister of Information Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah and the board members.

Further, the ministers hailed the support lent to the Gulf Radio and Television Organization (GRTO) from Saudi Arabia and from GRTO Chairman and Saudi Minister of Culture and Information Abdulaziz Mohaydin Al-Khuja and the board members.

The ministers also agreed on JPPI's rehashing some old children programs that had a large scale appeal.

Concerning the upcoming meeting of the GCC Ministers of Information, the ministers agreed on entrusting the GCC General Secretariat with coordinating stances with the hosting country of United Arab Emirates in order to determine the day and venue of holding the 19th meeting of GCC information ministers which will be September 2011.

Finally, the GCC Ministers of Information sent a cable of thanks to the H.

H. the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for his constant support to GCC, and they also expressed their thanks for the State of Kuwait for its hospitality.

The ministers also thanked Kuwaiti Minister of information and Minister of Oil Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and the Undersecretaries of the Ministries of Information for preparing the meeting's agenda and the GCC General Secretariat for good organization and good preparations of the event.
