EU financing sanitation and industrial cleaning projects in Morocco

Morocco (Rabat) - Morocco and the European Union (UE) signed a 550 million dirham financing agreement to support the national programme on sanitation and industrial cleaning.

The agreement was signed by Economy and Finance Minister, Salaheddine Mezouar, Secretary of State to the Interior Minister, Saad Hassar, Secretary of State in charge of Water and Environment, Abdelkebir Zahoud and EU Ambassador to Morocco, Eneko Landaburu.

Speaking on this occasion, Mezouar stressed the high priority given by the Moroccan government to the programme in order to "cope, by 2020, with the backlog in sanitation sector."

The 43 billion dirham programme aims at “reaching a rate of 80% in rural areas in terms of connection to the sewerage system against 70% currently, and reducing pollution from wastewater to at least 60%, he said.

Besides the EU’s 50 million Euros and a 10 million Euros by the Neighbourhood Investment Facility, the programme will also benefit from the support of the French Development Agency, the German Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

For his part, Landaburu welcomed the signing of this “important programme” which will improve access to sanitation for the poorest social classes, adding that it will benefit 200,000 people and enable the construction of 25 sewage treatment plants.
