Egypt (Cairo) - The defense lawyers of Egyptian billionaire and former prominent political figure Hisham Talaat Mustafa have lodged an appeal to the country's Court of Cassation against the 15-year prison sentence given to the man for involvement in the murder of Lebanese pop star Suzanne Tamim.

The criminal court of Cairo previously found that Mustafa was guilty of paying USD two million to Muhsin Al-Sukkari, an ex-policeman, to kill the singer.

Tamim, Mustafa's ex-wife, was found dead at her luxurious apartment of Golden Sands hotel in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in late July, 2008.

Al-Sukkari was initially sentenced to death which was later commuted to 25-year imprisonment.

Mustafa's defense lawyers protest that the Cairo court was mistaken in carrying out the procedures of the former trial as it did not give them a chance to defend their client properly.

Mustafa is the former head of the Talaat Mustafa Group property empire, ex-member of the Shura Council (the upper house of the Egyptian parliament), and ex-member of the policy-making body of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP).
