UK Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt ends his two day visit to Algeria.

Mr Alistair Burt, the British Minister for the Middle East and North Africa ended a two day visit to Algeria. This was Mr Burt’s first visit to Algeria, and his first visit to the Maghreb region since taking up his role in May 2010.

Mr Burt was hosted by HE Mr Abdelkader Messahel, Minister Delege for Maghreb and African Affairs and the two held a series of discussions on the bilateral relationship and regional issues. Both agreed on the need to continue to work closely together on a range of joint priorities, particularly on the need to combat the menace of terrorism in the region. Mr Burt also held similar discussions on the security situation in the Sahel with HE Mr Rezag Bara, Adviser to HE the President of the Republic. Mr Burt welcomed the recent establishment of the bilateral CT Committee and said that “the UK and Algeria had much to learn from each other through our tragic experiences as the victims of terrorism”.

Mr Burt was also received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Mr Mourad Medelci. They discussed a number of important regional issues, including the Middle East Peace Process, Lebanon and Western Sahara, in addition to the bilateral relationship.

The British Embassy also hosted a meeting with representatives of the UK and Algerian business communities to discuss the many opportunities available for expanding the trade relationship, which has already experienced double digit growth in recent years.

At the end of his visit, Mr Burt said: “I was delighted to be able to visit Algeria so soon after my appointment as Minister with responsibility for the UK’s relationship to Algeria. We have a longstanding relationship but I am convinced that there is much that we can do to co-operate more closely on a range of priorities for both our governments, including counter terrorism, drugs, energy and expanding the commercial relationship.”
