Telecommunication Sector in Oman – Implementing Fiber Optic Network

Oman (Muscat) - Mohammed bin Nasser al Khusaibi, Secretary General of the National Economy Ministry and Chairman of the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) said that the government has allocated the required funds to implement an Fiber Optic Network project in Muscat Governorate in a bid to avail developed telecom infrastructure. He pointed out that this coincides with the implementation of Muscat Wastewater project by Oman Wastewater Services Company to reduce time and effort at the same time.

In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), he said that the optic fiber network is one of the important projects currently implemented by the government in the telecommunications sector in a bid to promote the level of this sector. The Sultanate is always keen to enhance the infrastructure of the e-government and keep pace with the latest developments in telecommunications field, especially the sector plays an important role in the socioeconomic development and add value to life of citizens and residents in the Sultanate.

Al Khusaibi affirmed that the optic fiber network for Muscat Governorate will play a big role in supporting the national economy by providing broadband communication services, which develop the e-commerce by providing permanent communication channels for investors and businessmen.

He added that this network represents a developed telecommunications infrastructure, which will enable licensed telecommunication operators to develop their services, especially those related to broadband used in transferring and exchanging electronic data.

He pointed out that the new network will develop the education sector in Muscat Governorate by facilitating the exchange of information among universities and schools either inside or outside Muscat. It will also facilitate the distance learning and assist the medical staff to provide the diagnostic and treatment services for individuals and to organize meetings and conferences.

‘This network will facilitate the management of security and surveillance and provide many services for houses, such as, internet, high definition TV services and other services for e-content in the future, al Khusaibi furthered.

Eng. Omar bin Khalfan al Wahaibi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Oman Wastewater Services Company, Haya Water, said that the company, in coordination with TRA has utilized the digging works implemented for Muscat Wastewater Project in extending pipelines network to facilitate the reach of optic fiber network to every house that benefit from the wastewater service in Muscat Governorate. This will assist the development of the telecommunication infrastructure in Muscat and make it at par with the best cities in the world in terms of providing this service.

In a statement to ONA, Eng. al Wahaibi added that 110 mm wide pipes will be extended for the main network lines and another 25 mm wide pipe for the sub networks, in addition to, construction of inspection rooms for this network. He pointed out that Haya Water in collaboration with Omantel, is currently implementing a model project for this pioneering experience in Northern Al Ma'abela, where the company will implement an optic fiber network and special exchange, which will cover about 1000 commercial and residential units.

He pointed out that work is underway at a number of optic fiber networks in different areas in Muscat Governorate, which are expected to cover about 5000 commercial and residential units by 2011. The company seeks to cover 45,000 units by the end of 2012.
