Italy praises development efforts in Morocco

Italy (Rome) - Italian undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Stefania Craxi, welcomed the "remarkable progress" made by Morocco to develop its manufacturing sector and promote the rights of citizens.

Morocco's case is "exemplary" in the Arab world. Despite the difficulties confronting the region, the kingdom was able to make significant strides in terms of development by modernizing its manufacturing sector and promoting civil and human rights, she said at a conference in Rome on "the Arab world and reforms: Morocco a model."

The Italian official also hailed progress made in favor of Moroccan women, an area where, she said, Morocco "is at the forefront" of Arab countries.

Craxi praised cooperation relations between Morocco and the European Union (EU) as well as major joint projects implemented by both parties, stressing the need to make of the Mediterranean region an area of peace and cooperation.

The Mediterranean should not be a border, but a bridge between the two sides for more partnership between the countries of the region, the Craxi insisted, adding that the time has come to reinforce this cooperation through concrete projects generating benefits for the entire region.

Some 150 Moroccan and Italian personalities and representatives of international agencies take part in this conference, organized by the Italian Institute for Asia and the Mediterranean (ISIAMED).
