UAE (Dubai) - UAE Minister of Public Works Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al-Nuhayyan said media achievements during the past 39 years in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were a turning point in the march of local press.

The media achievements have turned the UAE from a local to international surrounding, thanks to the great professional and technical leaps, Sheikh Hamdan, also head of the USE's National Media Council, said in a statement cited by UAE's news agency (WAM) Monday.

The UAE, he added, has established training courses in collaboration with best media institutions and academies in the world, and created Mass Communication departments in government and private universities.

Sheikh Hamdan said there were 15 TV channels, 24 radio stations, nine daily Arabic newspapers and seven English dailies, in addition to tens of weekly and monthly magazines, and specialized periodicals.

The UAE, he added, has four free media zones which housed media organizations - TV and radio stations, and written press.

"Figures speak loudly on the UAE achievements where 15 TV channels, 24 radio stations, 9 Arabic language dailies, 7 English language dailies, WAM and tens of weeklies, monthlies and periodicals operate in the UAE," Sheikh Hamdan Said.

"The UAE hosts four media free zones where hundreds of regional and international media outlets operate. Abu Dhabi's media free zone alone hosts 115 media outlets from all over the world while Dubai Media City hosts 875 outlets," he added.

"The UAE believes in the need for openness to other cultures and for introducing its own culture and comprehensive development. Therefore we have special interest in the UAE's participation in the annual events held by GCC in the capital cities of other countries," he said.

Sheikh Hamdan said the National Media Council was committed to expanding its services and usage of internet in strategic planning.

On the media cooperation between the six GCC countries, the UAE official said the National Media Council sought to unify media policies in the Arab Gulf countries.
