For the first time in Egypt, solar energy was used to lighten two Siwa villages, said Electricity and Energy Minister Hassan Younis.

The two villages are Umm al-Saghir and Ain Zahra. The three-million-pound project comes as part of cooperation between the Italian Ministry for Environment and Territory and Egypt's National Renewable Energy Authority, Younis said in press statements.

Houses, medical units, schools and mosques in both villages were be lightened by solar energy, he added.

The project is part of a plan to lighten remote villages that are away from electrical power grid, he said.

The two villages were chosen in coordination with Matrouh governorate and Behaira Electricity Distribution Company, he said.

Egypt's first thermal-solar power station will be operational in February 2011, the Minister said. The 140-megawatt plant is located in Koraimat.

The Minister stressed that Egypt gives high priority to renewable energies, where Egypt participates in several global initiatives to make use of the sun's energy. He added that Egypt has adopted many procedures that enable it to be one of the leading countries that have qualified human resources and capabilities that enable it to exploit the solar energy.

Minister Younis pointed out that Egypt enjoys a tremendous wealth of solar energy and wind, referring to the existence of vast areas allocated by the State for this purpose.

He added that the national electricity grid covers all regions and allows the transfer of energy produced from any area to the Arab and European link networks, the matter which strengthens Egypt’s role as a pivotal center for power and as a partner in the supply and passage of energy. (SIS)
