Qatar Promising Spectacular Inauguration of Asian Football Cup

Qatar (Doha) - A spectacular Opening Gesture will herald the 16-nation Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup finals starting here January 7 with the first match between hosts Qatar and Uzbekistan, organisers said Wednesday. The Opening Gesture - the official inauguration of the tournament - is "a goodwill and welcome gesture to participants and fans" which will be held Friday at Khalifa Stadium, a senior official from the Local Organising Committee (QLOC) told Qatar News Agency (QNA) today.

A grand opening comprising a vast array of pre-match entertainment events - including the Khalifa Stadium Fan Zone is planned.

"Considering the importance of the tournament" details about the programme are kept under wraps to enhance the curiosity of fans and spectators, the official said.

The gates of Khalifa Stadium will open at 1500 hours Friday. Spectators, officials and media corps should take their seats before 1700 hours, to be able to experience what promises to be a spectacular Opening Gesture, the QLOC said.

The AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011 features the national teams of: Qatar, Kuwait, China, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Jordan, Syria, Korea Republic, India, Australia, Bahrain, Iraq, DPR Korea, UAE and Iran. (QNA)
