Oman: Marine Transportation Project for Indian Ocean Rim States

Oman (Muscat) - The Seminar on "Services Trade and Disputes Settlement under World Trade Organization (WTO) was inaugurated at the headquarters of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) under the auspices of Muhsen bin Khamis al-Balushi, Advisor of Ministry of Commerce and Industry in the presence of Jameel bin Ali sultan, OCCI's Deputy Chairman and the Regional Manager of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IORARC) with the participation of a number of experts and researchers in fields of trade and economy.

Said bin Nasser al-khusaibi, head of the IORARC's Businessmen Forum delivered a speech on this occasion, pinpointing that there is coordination for setting up a marine transportation project for the IORARC's member states aiming at facilitating the cooperation in the marine transportation amongst them, as well as, boosting the commercial ties and following up the marine transportation activities, coordination and cooperation in this field.

"The council will be located in Muscat as approval was granted during the ministerial meeting that was held in August 2010 in the Yemeni capital city of Sanaa. Coordination is currently made between OCCI and the Ministry of Transport and Communications for completing the necessary procedures and it is expected to commence work in this year" al-Khusaibi added.

Al-Khusaibi also said that OCCI is coordinating for preparing the feasibility study for the project of tourism development in the IORARC's member states. This study is financed by OCCI in cooperation with the Omani Ministry of Tourism, the IORARC's fund. It is expected that the Islamic Republic of Iran will contribute in financing the project study.

"Pursuant to the agreement between the Omani Ministry of Fisheries and IORARC, a fishery supporting unit was established in the Sultanate. This is one of the important projects that will benefit the fisheries sector in the member states" al-Khusaibi said.

On his part, IORARC's Regional Director praised the OCCI's dynamic contribution, pressing that the seminar "Service Trade and Disputes Settlement", particularly in the globalization era that posed several challenges and crisis in particular for the economic sector.

IORARC's Regional Director underlined the problems currently facing the developing countries, in terms of the disputes including lack of human and financial resources that could be tackled through common cooperation between the governments and spread of awareness in our region.

The seminar discussed working papers about Doha Agenda for Development from the Omani Perspective, Sultanate's experience in liberating the financial service, Sultanate's experience on liberation of the communications sector, disputes settlement under the World Trade Organization.

The seminar aimed at briefing the participants about the legislative and legal advantages and services within the WTO's frame. The seminar also targeted providing information about the dispute settlement system and more awareness about the rights and duties.

The seminar was concluded by a discussion and dialogue session for the participants where questions and remarks about the working papers, issues of trade service and commercial disputes were answered, in addition to other relevant topics.
