Tunisia (Tunis) - Foreign companies based in different regions of Tunisia started resuming their activities while project developers are determined to move forward, said Mr. Noureddine Zekri, Director- General of Foreign Investment at the Ministry of Planning and International Co-operation.

The three thousand foreign companies operating in Tunisia, he said to TAP news agency, had not suffered material damage thanks to the vigilance of the staff and civil defence committees. Although surveys conducted by the Tunisian-German and Tunisian-French Chambers of Commerce and industry show a resumption of activities in different foreign companies, order delays were reported due to security measures implemented in ports and airports, causing congestion and impeding consequently imports and exports.

In this connection, he said that surveyed companies were optimistic about Tunisia's future and the return to a healthy climate of investment.

Regarding tourism,  Suspension of departure French tourists has been extended to January 31 but tour operators voiced readiness to start at any moment, according to  the French Tour Operators Association, CETO.

The French travel agencies "continue to assess the local situation and prepare for re-opening of the destination at any moment, as soon as conditions of resumption will be met."

Re-opening could be made swiftly, specified CETO chairman

René-Marc Chikli to AFP, if the curfew is lifted by the Tunisian authorities, particularly in Tunisian south, Monastir and Djerba for example."

Demonstrations are still being staged in protest against the transition government, but looting which followed the departure of the ousted President has disappeared.

According to the tour operators, "French people have never been at risk," added Mr. Chikli, notably in the seaside hotels where more than 150 among them decided to stay while 9,000 French holiday-makers were repatriated from Saturday to Monday.

Several travel agencies were already committed to support the destination starting from the beginning of departures, for Tunisia weighs a lot on their sale.

Concerning departures during the next school holidays, as of February 12, tour operators continue to book for Tunisia, while setting a commercial flexibility.

It is to be reminded that France is Tunisia's first tourists-supplier with 1.350 million visitors.
