Oman (Muscat) - Dr. Irina Bokova UNESCO Director-General pointed to the significance of the Education for Sustainable Development Conference for Promoting the Cultural and Biological Diversity, indicating that the conference that is being held at the initiative of the Sultanate of Oman is an important event as it aims at confronting the challenges that we are currently facing while trying to preserve the biodiversity, climate change and human activity.

Dr. Irina said that there is a link between the cultural and bio-diversity. In order to realize the sustainable development in the society and heritage, the bio-diversity should be preserved, hailing the Omani role in preserving the cultural diversity.

"The Sultanate has made a good effort in terms of preserving the cultural diversity and the preservation of the marine spices, in addition to its endeavors to link between the cultural diversity and biodiversity in the local and international circles" she said. The Directorate-General of the UNESCO also indicated to the government's concern about this human ambition in the cultural and bio-diversity and the linkage between them.

"We are in need for more efforts to know others' heritage and culture and cooperate throughout the insertion of this diversity in our academic curricula. Modern technologies become a tool for communication and we have to know and respect other people's cultures and cooperate in this regard".  Dr. Irina added.

She also said that the UNESCO has a major agenda in this issue as we will make special programmes and activities that deal with the cultural identities and dialogue between cultures, explaining that the UNESCO will publish the first report on the world cultural and bio-diversity, urging to exert more efforts to insert these issues in the academic curricula.
