Syrian Archaeologist: Ayyubid-era and Mamluk-era Artefacts Uncovered at Castles in Hama

Syria (Hama) – Excavations of the national archaeological expeditions at Salmiya and Shmaimees Castles in Hama governorate managed to uncover hidden lower levels and pottery fragments and coins.

The uncovered levels form the unmodified foundations of Salmiya Castle. They were built during the Ayyubid era, debunking previous theories that the castles were built during the Byzantine era.

Only the exterior wall of the castle, which is 20 meters long and four meters high, remains standing today.

Excavations at Shmaimees Castle uncovered a turret, several old water basins, coins and pottery fragments, all of which date back to the Mamluki era. These excavations aim to find older levels dating back to the Hellenistic and Romans eras which are believed to be the eras when the foundations were built.
