Morocco, Russia to cement partnership in fisheries sector

Morocco (Agadir) - Morocco and Russia agreed to further strengthen their partnership in the field of fisheries, following a meeting, held in Agadir, between Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Aziz Akhennouch and Russia's head of the federal agency for fisheries Andrei Kraini.

The talks, which took place on the sidelines of the International Halieutis Fair, focused mainly on ways to further develop bilateral cooperation in terms of research and training, said Akhennouch.

Rabat and Moscow are bound by a fisheries agreement, which was recently renewed for a period of two years.

In 2010, Morocco exported to Russia about 300 million dirhams of seafood, including 90% of fishmeal.

Andrei Kraini said that trade volume between the two countries on fisheries will increase substantially in the next two years.

Besides Russia, some thirty countries are participating in the first Halieutis Fair, held under the patronage of HM King Mohammed VI.

The Fair, which runs until January 29th, is expected to attract over 120,000 visitors.

It offers the participants, professionals and institutions an opportunity to exchange expertise and ponder on the technical, scientific and socioeconomic means to support the momentum witnessed in the fisheries sector in Morocco and establish mutually beneficial partnerships.
