Tunisia (Tunis) - The effective resumption of foreign business in this crucial period experienced by the country is necessary according to Mrs. Mongia Khemiri, Director General of the Foreign Investment Promotion Agency (FIPA).

During a meeting with the press on Friday in Tunis, she reminded of the importance of foreign direct investment (FDI) in generating jobs and boosting the national economy. Some 3,175 foreign companies are based in Tunisia, Global Arab Network reports according to TAP.

FDIs, whose total value is estimated to late 2010 to 2,425 million Tunisian dinars (MTD), generate 325,000 steady jobs. It contributes up to 25% to jobs created annually at the national level. Their share in the GDP ranges between 5% and 6%, she added. Despite difficulties faced in the recent period (as a result of congestion in customs, delay in delivery, etc.), foreign companies based in Tunisia showed entire support for the Revolution the country has lived through and some confidence in the improvement of the climate of investment, thanks to the establishment of democracy, said Mrs. Khemiri.

FIPA director general said 15 companies operating in the textile, technical textile, mechanical and electronics sectors located in Zaghouan, Tunis, Borj Cédria and Monastir were entirely burnt and damage reported there is estimated at 12 MTD.

This situation, however, has not prevented their owners to express intention to restart and carry on their activities in Tunisia, she said. She pointed out that foreign promoters voiced confidence in Tunisia’s assets, namely the country’s competent human resources, modern infrastructure and structured administration. The country can also boast now transparency and ethics necessary for the good progress of business. These new data will be emphasised by FIPA in its future programmes designed to boost FDIs, Mrs. Khemiri said in conclusion.
