Syria (Damascus) - Agriculture is considered one of the most important sectors of the national economy in Syria as it contributes with 25 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), and more than 30 percent of the workforce is working in this sector.

Agriculture also plays an important role in providing the raw materials of several industries which depend on the agricultural products.

The agricultural production is one of the Syrian Government's priorities and its developmental plans as it constantly works on supporting it due to its strategic economic and social importance.

The 11th five-year plan aims at enhancing the agriculture sector as it has allocated SYP 197 billion ($ 4.3 Billion) for making investments in this sector, in addition to allotting SYP 209 billions for supporting the Agricultural Support Fund and the modern irrigation.

The 10th five-year plan paid a great attention to the agricultural sector which contributed to improving this sector as it witnessed a growth of 0,8 percent over the years of the plan.

The 11th five-year plan aims at increasing the growth of the agricultural sector to reach 2,2 percent starting with 2 percent in 2011 to hit 3,3 percent by the end of the plan based on the available capabilities such as the arable lands, the reclamation, and the water.

Syria is distinguished by the variety of the agricultural environments which has contributed to producing various agricultural crops such as grains, vegetables and fruits, in addition to breeding animals.

Most of the investments in the agricultural sector are private as the Government has significantly contributed to encouraging agriculture through providing the complete support for the farmers and opening the markets for exportation.

Due to the climatic changes over the past few years, the Cabinet worked on taking several measures to support the peasants such as establishing a special fund for supporting the agricultural production in 2009.

Syria supported the prices of some agricultural products such as the strategic crops including the wheat, barely, cotton and sugar beet, in addition to some of the agricultural and animal products.

The Government urged the farmers to use the modern irrigation methods through offering grants of about 50 percent for those who want to shift form the traditional to the modern irrigation methods.

The future vision of the agricultural sector is based on reaching the optimal use of the natural resources and guaranteeing their sustainability taking into consideration the environmental dimension to meet the needs of the economic and social development, and to achieve food security.

Syria also works on providing a suitable investment atmosphere for encouraging the investment in the agricultural sector, and for manufacturing the agricultural products to increase the revenues of the agricultural sector, to provide more job opportunities and to better the living standards.
