Madrid - Morocco has taken important steps in fighting various forms of violence and discrimination against women, a work praised by international bodies and organizations, said Saadia Belmir, a judge at the Supreme Court and Vice-President of the UN Committee against Torture (CAT).

Through dialogue, Morocco was able to reform a number of laws granting more rights and equality for women, noted the UN expert who participated, Tuesday and Wednesday in Madrid, in reflection days on the "International Action to Fight Violence against Women."

Belmir was invited by the organizers of these days to explain her views and Morocco’s experience in fighting various forms of violence against women.

In this regard, she cited the "Moudouwana" (family code) as a reform that gives more rights and equality for women and an example in the Arab and Muslim world.

The path undertaken by the Kingdom in the fight against discrimination and gender violence is significant, but women as well as civil society NGOs call for "a little more criminalization of violence against women," she stressed.

Belmir also drew attention to the importance of education as a means that can help curb the phenomenon of gender violence.

Organized by the Carlos III University of Madrid and Casa América, in collaboration with the Spanish Foreign Ministry and the State Secretariat for Equality, these reflection days will assess and develop a complete vision on the constraints faced by the promotion of the fight against gender violence internationally.
