Ahead of London Fashion Week Reem Alasadi, an Iraqi born fashion designer, has made a video for the Foreign Office Olympic campaign to tell the world how Britain’s multicultural society has allowed creativity to flourish within the fashion industry, Global Arab Network reports according to a press statement.

The video is one of series from leading artists, athletes and business people based in the UK which tell the story of modern Britain to other countries before the 2012 Olympics.

In the video Reem says:
“British fashion has to be number one – everybody in the whole world looks at British designers and what they’re doing. The boundaries are there to be broken - I’m an Iraqi, living in Britain and I probably wouldn’t have done this anywhere else but this country,”

Reem Alasadi talks about how her ability to express herself through her designs is testament to a British fashion industry that knows no bounds.  She was awarded a place at the London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and by the age of 21, had set up her first label.

From a stall at Portobello Road market, to her showrooms in London and Tokyo, Reem Alasadi’s contribution to the fashion world has been acknowledged through accolades at both London Fashion Week and Japan Fashion Week. In fact, she was the first non-Japanese designer to show at the Tokyo event in 2010.

Reem Alasadi recognises that her success may not have been possible had it not been for the platform the British fashion world presents for designers such as her.

She says:
“I probably wouldn’t have done this anywhere else but this country….in the UK, you just know you are free.”

As a British Arab, Reem Alasadi points to how the UK has struck a balance between recognising its heritage and traditions and also leading the way in creativity and modern design.
