British Premier David Cameroon stressed the deep-seated ties binding the two friendly countries, UN and Kuwait, speaking highly of what the State of Kuwait made of achievements not after its liberation since 20 years ago, but since its independence 50 years ago.

Cameroon made the previous remarks in an address delivered before the Kuwaiti National Assembly following his meeting with Kuwaiti Parliament Speaker Jassem Al-Kharafi and a number of members of parliament.

Further, Cameroon expressed his happiness over giving a speech before the Kuwaiti parliament, in such distinctive time in which Kuwait celebrates its 50th independence anniversary, and its 20th anniversary marking its liberation from the troops of the defunct regime of Saddam Hussein who invaded THE country two decades ago.

Cameroon added that two world leaders sensed then the danger, and they were former US President George Bush, and former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who explained the situation when she said that Saddam's invasion of Kuwait challenged all principles of the UN, and if he was let to go, then no small country would be safe, and the law of jungle would reign supreme over the rule of law.

Additionally, Cameroon recalled the role played by his own coutry, and the US in forming a big coalition of Arab and other countries in order to stand by the State of Kuwait, "under such dark hour, and to make clear that indepedent states must not be jeopardized, and must not have their legs swallowed by the quicksand." Cameroon also said that he takes pride in being a successor of Thatcher, then a successor for a man who helped achieve victory for the coalition, namely John Major," hailing in this respect the 47 British soldiers, and their colleagues of the coalition's force who sacrificed their souls in order to liberate Kuwait.

The UK Premier added that the State of Kuwait achieved a lot, "not only since its liberation 20 years ago, but through a 50 years of independence.

Additionally, he said that as his state stood by Kuwait in 1990 in order to defend its right to self-determination, it will support nowadays peoples and governments that apply justice, rule of the law, and freedoms, in a reference to the revolutions that some countries of the region recently have seen.

He also stressed that no one has the right to tell these countries how to do this, or the form upon which the future should be based, though there is only single formula of success including guaranteeing popular participation in the government as well as respecting the right of each country to make its own decisions.

Regarding the bilateral relationships binding his country and Kuwait, Cameroon recalled that they are deep-rooted ones since the first British ship laid anchor at Kuwaiti port in the 17th century, and what followed this of signing the protectorate agreement in 1899, and up till now.

In this context, he made clear that that the partnership between Britain and Kuwait is based on the economic future of the two countries, referring that economies of the two countries should grow and diversify in such world which is fraught with challenges.

He added that there are common security interests requiring a confrontation of the threats of terror and extremism, and that British partnership played a key role in fulfilling the hopes of development for peoples of the Arab Gulf region." Cameroon also hailed the role played by the Kuwaiti National Assembly in mulling the national issues, saying that the parliament is the right place to discuss the national issues.

Concerning the business ties between UK and Kuwait, Cameroon said Kuwait hugely invests in Britain, with a body like Investment Authority investing 150 British Pounds over the past fifty years, most of them in the British Isles." Cameroon added that the volume of trade and investment between UK and Britain exceeds 1 billion British pounds annually, noting that he along with His Highness Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah are facing the challenges of doubling such figure over the coming five years.

On his part, Al-Kharafi warmly welcomed Cameroon's along with his accompanying delegation, saying that, "he a dear visitor to the Kuwaiti National Assembly, and an intimate friend of Kuwait, and I hope him a good stay in our country." Al-Kharafi added that Cameroon's visit comes, "within an atmosphere of joy, " marking Kuwait 50th independence anniversary, its 20th independence anniversary, and 5th anniversary of the assumption of power by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Al-Kharafi also hailed the UK stance on supporting Kuwait during the unjust aggression of the defunct regime of Saddam Hussein, saying that, "UK adopted a clear and robust stance on championing the Kuwaiti right in the face of injustice and aggression whether at UN or other international gatherings, and also through its military participation in the war for liberating Kuwait." Finally, he said that inter-parliamentary cooperation between the two countries "undoubtedly" represents a momentous aspect contributing to bolstering bilateral ties of the two countries, as parliaments of the two countries are keen on coordinating stances at the various international gatherings in the interest of the mutual concerns, adding that, "we are looking forward to cementing such kind of cooperation.
