Jordan (Amman) - Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh and his Swedish counterpart Carl Bildt on Sunday discussed efforts to break the stalemate in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

The ministers emphasised the deep and strategic ties between Amman and Stockholm and their continued consultation on various world issues of common interest. Judeh underlined the role of Sweden and Europe as a whole in advancing peace efforts in the Middle East.

He said direct Palestinian-Israeli peace talks should commence to address the final status issues of Jerusalem, borders, refugees and water through a clear approach leading to an independent, viable, sovereign and contiguous Palestinian state on the 4th of July 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as it capital.

Judeh added that negotiations should go forward according to a set timeline ending in September of this year and proceed in line agreed international terms of reference and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative.

He stressed that the Palestinian issue is the crux of the Middle East conflict, warning that without finding a comprehensive solution to it, the region and the world would never see security and stability.
Bildt hailed political and socio-economic reforms undertaken by Jordan, pledging Stockholm's support of the development drive now underway in various spheres. Judeh told a press conference after the talks that Jordan and Sweden had maintained close ties in various fields and that today's talks focused on ways of cementing cooperation and building on what had been achieved over the past decades in addition to regional developments.

He commended Sweden's support of Jordan in various developmental areas which directly affect the lives of citizens in the Kingdom. Judeh also cautioned that the turmoil in the region should not distract world attention from the Palestinian cause as the region's core issue, reiterating that the right of statehood to Palestinians is not negotiable.

Bildt hailed Jordan's peace efforts led by His Majesty King Abdullah, pledging Sweden's support of attempts to put direct negotiations back on track towards finding a peace settlement leading ultimately to two states and reflecting on regional stability. He called on Israelis and Palestinians to speedily return to the negotiating table as "an utmost necessity at this stage." (Petra)
