KUWAIT - Minister of Communication and Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Civil Aviation Dr. Mohammad Al-Busairi stressed Monday the significance of the contract signed on projects management services for developing Kuwait International Airport.

Al-Busairi said -- in a statement made today -- during signing the contract that the State of Kuwait sees a stage that focuses on establishing specialized projects that bring benefits to the national economy.

He added that the contract of projects management services contract aims at implementing the projects of the structural five-year plan supervised by the Spanish Company Enco in cooperation with the Kuwait United Development at a cost estimated at KD 10.2 million.

As for the new terminal 2 at the airport, Al-Busairi said that it will cost some KD 300 with a capacity of 25 million passengers annually compared to the previous maximum capacity which hit 8 million passengers annually, noting that the new terminal could be further expanded in the future to absorb nearly 45 million passenters annually.

Further, Al-Busairi said that construction works in the freight city -- that had its contract signed in the past few months and will be the biggest at the level of the Middle East -- is under way and it will be operated after one year and half, deeming the first year of the five-year development plan a harsh one for state institutions as the investment expenditure exceeds KD 5 billion, and will hit KD 30 billion over the coming five years.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Spanish Company Enco said that the partnership with the Kuwait United Development Company dates back to seven years when the two firms worked hand in hand within the main plan devised for Kuwait Underground Metro project, the most important enterprise in the history of the Spanish firm.

He added that his company is one of the most important firms working in the domain of airport development in Europe due to its contribution to constructing terminals, and organizing the air transport and marketing departments and other services related to airports, making clear the firm's working staff exceed 3000, while the number of airports developed by it hit 70 including airports in Spain, Italy, Jamaica, Chile, Namibia, Morocco, and Egypt.
