Egypt’s Prime Minister Essam Sharaf chaired his first meeting of the Higher Committee on Nile water.

The meeting took up a number of important reports, including one presented by Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hussein el-Etifi on a controversial accord proposed by the upstream Nile basin countries.

This was the panel's first meeting in more than three months.

Sharaf said it is crucial to foster cooperation with Nile Basin countries in order to achieve the main aims of the Nile Basin Initiative, which calls for realizing integrated development.

Cabinet Spokesman Magdi Radi said Sharaf underlined during the meeting the fact that Egypt sees dialogue as the only way to reach a balanced formula for a framework agreement among the relevant countries, taking into consideration the interests of all parties concerned.

Reform Package to EU
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hussien el-Atfi said on Sunday his Ministry will present an urgent package of projects to the EU for financial and technical support.

The projects include the rehabilitation of old irrigation and drainage systems, protecting coastal shores against erosion and protecting the infrastructure adjacent to the Egyptian coasts as well, Atfi said.

The remarks followed a meeting today with EU Ambassador in Cairo Marco Franco.

The Minister also called for forming technical committees to be entrusted with contacting the bodies concerned in the EU. (SIS)
