Syria: Maritime Transport Sector Provides over 26000 Job Opportunities

Syria (Lattakia) – The Syrian maritime transport sector provides more than 26,000 job opportunities that vary between working on board of ships and at ports.

The sector's contribution to employment in the country necessitates for continuous improvement to raise the work efficiency of workers in addition to introducing new legislations and mechanisms to save time and efforts.

According to the international laws and legislations, the ship's captain or owner has to appoint a port agent responsible for all matters related to ship.

Head of Maritime Agents' Department, Hassan Jindi said "in Syria, these services had been restricted to the Shipping Agencies Company until the issuance of the legislative decree no. 55 for 2002 which allowed the private sector to practice shipping agency activities.

Later on, the Syrian Chamber of Shipping was established in 2006 to regulate the work of private companies and agencies serving as a link between ship owners and transport companies.

The prominent 16 branches of maritime work in Syria defined in Law No. 27 for 2008 include ship management, ship chandling services, consultations and maritime services, in addition to ship building, manufacturing and repairing.

Director General of the Syrian Maritime and Transport Agency Company, Jamal Baddour, said the number of shipping agencies licensed to operate in Syria exceeds 80. (SANA)
