Qatar (Doha) - The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has announced an annual world award in the name of Ali Hassan Al Jaber, the Al Jazeera cameraman who was ambushed outside Benghazi last Saturday while courageously covering the current uprisings in Libya. Chairman of National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Dr. Ali bin Samikh Al Mirri, said while addressing the annual  Arab day for Human Rights  held at the Grand Regency Hotel yesterday that such an award will be granted to the media men and employees who are offering acts revealing the human abuses and violations and their culprits.

He lauded the sublime message of the free and faithful media in raising the voice of the truth, the voice of the Libyan people who revolt for practicing their right to freedom of expression which is a fundamental pillar for the construction of the societies and which was confirmed by the international human rights conventions especially the world declaration for human rights.

The yesterday condemned the assassination of Al Jazeera cameraman Ali Hassan Al Jaber at an event held in Doha.

The killing is a violation of human rights and media freedom and it's a threat to freedom of speech, said al Mirri at the annual  Arab day for Human Rights  held at the Grand Regency Hotel.

Al Mirri condemned the Libyan government for the killing and urged all Arab states to respect the freedom and public opinion, while promising to join hand with Al Jazeera to take legal action against those who are behind the killing of Al Jaber. He further announced that a prize for brave media personnel will be awarded every year to honour Al Jaber.

While, the official website of the NHRC was also inaugurated by Al Mirri, both in Arabic and English giving information on the committee s activities and services. Twenty-one lawyers were also honoured for their contribution to protect human rights in Qatar at the ceremony.

Al Mirri, said while addressing the annual  Arab day for Human Rights said the criminal attack which targeted martyr Ali Hassan Al Jaber is a flagrant attack against the freedom of media , press and freedom of expression and a blatant violation to all values assured by the heavenly laws and principles of human right involved in the international law of human rights and the international law especially the Geneva convention related to the protection of civilians in times of war and armed conflicts.
Earlier Wednesday and in a related development, a Qatari charitable fund set up  a similar award in tribute to Ali Hassan Al Jaber, the Al Jazeera cameraman killed while covering the uprisings in Libya.

The Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) announced on Wednesday the plan to name the fund after the cameraman.
Ali Hassan Al Jaber was returning to Benghazi from a nearby town after filing a report from an opposition protest when unknown fighters opened fire on a car he and his colleagues were travelling in.  Two people including Al Jaber were shot. Al Jaber was rushed to hospital, but did not survive.

Ayed bin Dbassan Al-Qahtani, RAF director general said the fund would be open to all individuals, institutions or companies, adding that RAF will allocate QR500,000 as an initial amount to the fund.

He said in comments published by Qatar News Agency that the foundation was now working to meet all the legal procedures needed to formally launch the fund.
Al-Qahtani said that the proceeds of the fund will be allocated for humanitarian cases across the Middle East and North Africa region. (QNA)
