Oman (SALALAH) — Within the government’s endeavour to develop infrastructure for the economic activity in the Sultanate, an agreement to construct Salalah new airport (MC5), worth RO 294,109,999, was signed at Crowne Plaza Salalah Hotel here yesterday. Transport and Communications Minister Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Futaisi signed the pact with Galfar Engineering and Contracting company in association with Larsen & Toubro company.

Al Futaisi said that the agreement provides for construction and civil works for the passenger terminal, the control tower, the service buildings and electronic systems and equipment. Al Futaisi pointed out that the project will be a qualitative improvement in the civil aviation sector in the Sultanate in general and Dhofar Governorate in particular. He hoped that the project will have good economic yields that serve Omani citizens.
Shaikh Mohammed bin Marhoon al Maamari, Minister of State and Governor of Dhofar, said that the agreement is an important achievement. He noted that the government of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos has a comprehensive strategy to develop airports, seaports and roads in the Sultanate with a view to upgrade economic, social and tourism activities in Dhofar Governorate in particular and the Sultanate in general.
A 30-month construction time frame has been specified for the execution of the Salalah Airport package. The design of the airport will allow for future expansions to be undertaken with relative ease. The modernised airport will also serve as an international and domestic hub for sea cargo in conjunction with the Port of Salalah and the Salalah Free Zone. — ONA
