Widespread disease - Kuwait registers 140000 diabetic patients

KUWAIT - There are 140,000 diabetic patients registered in clinics in Kuwait, Ministry of Health announced.

Diabetes has become a widespread disease, where its ratio is about five percent of the total world population.

Assistant Undersecretary of the Public Health Affairs in the Ministry of Health Dr. Youssef Al-Nisf said in a statement that the statistics and epidemiological studies reported that the prevalence of diabetes exceeded 16 percent in many GCC countries.

Al-Nisf who is also a member of the GCC Executive Body of the Ministers of Health said that GCC Health Ministers are concerned to combat the disease, where they signed a joint declaration to combat diabetes presented at the Ministerial Meeting for the Arab States that was held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, in March 2008.

The declaration stipulates that each minister is committed to its implementation, said Al-Nisf, stressing that Kuwait has implemented all of its clauses.

He stressed that the GCC plan to combat diabetes will be transferred into a national plan in Kuwait, with a seperate budget that includes an awarness campaign.

He said that the study to be carried out during the current year includes a World Health Survey in addition to the establishment of a diabetes unit in all hospitals.

Other GCC countries such as Saudi Arabia have allocated a SR 150 million for an awareness campaign for a period of no longer of three years.
